About Cambre House and Farm

Down an Illinois country road between Nauvoo and Niota in Hancock County, through pineapple topped brick gate posts, and at the end of a winding lane, is the Cambre House and Farm. Built in 1867 on a bluff 150 feet above the Mississippi River, the salt box style house, sitting on thirty acres, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Relly and Lois Fowler purchased the farm from the Cambre family in 1979, and their granddaughter Rebecca Williamson purchased it from their estate in 2016. The farm was for many years a fruit orchard run by the Cambre family. French Icarian Adolphe Cambre purchased the farm in 1860 and built the six room home in 1867. The farm was operated as an apple orchard until the 1940’s. Currently, the well preserved home and property is open as a wedding venue. You can visit during the annual Memorial Day open house and craft show, or call for private tours. Be sure to check for our various events through the year.
