During Prohibition, 33 West Kinzie was owned by Frank Nitti. Nitti was Capone’s enforcer and ran the Chicago Mob after Capone went to jail. Relics from his life of crime, including a safe and a phone book with alderman’s phone numbers, were discovered in 1998 when an electrician drilled a hole in the wall of the basement that revealed a hidden room spanning the width of the upstairs bar. The room was used as a hideout during the Prohibition era as well as a passageway to Chicago’s underground tunnel system, allowing Nitti and his associates to come and go without being seen on the streets of Chicago.
We’ve since uncovered evidence that 33 West Kinzie also housed a speakeasy and two illegal slot machine manufacturing companies in the 1920’s. As an homage to the building’s storied past, we have reconstructed the speakeasy on the second floor. Guests gain entry by pushing a hidden button on a bookcase and are immersed in vintage décor which transports them back to the 1920’s.
