During the last 15 years, Ernie has performed at many different events held at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Theatre and the Texas Jazz Festival in Corpus Christi, Texas. Ernie Garibay received the "Jimmy" Westside Rhythm & Blues Award for his contribution in the field of Rhythm & Blues. Since Ernie's brother (Randy Garibay) passing in May, 2002, Ernie has stepped in to continue performing with his late brother's band, Cats Don't Sleep and made it his own. Garibay now the Bassist and Vocalist for his band "Cats Don't Sleep" has overcome many trials and tribulations in his life but never gave up on his passion for music. Garibay's soulful voice is so dynamic and unique it's a true inspiration to those around him. His loyal listeners and fans know what to expect when they listen to his prolific array of songs. Garibay has worked the ever expanding variety-band trip, adding power and intensity to his special blend of songs from Oldies to Rhythm & Blues, from Country to Jazz. According to Houston's Joe Ramos Road Tales, "Garibay has an amazing vocal range and does justice to anything he sings, fast or slow, and especially the Etta James ballad, "I'd Rather Go Blind'! If you ain't heard Ernie Garibay sing this song, you just haven't lived!" Garibay and his Cats Don't Sleep celebrated the release of the band's debut CD, "The Seasons" August 2008. According to San Antonio's Express-News editor, Jim Beal, "Garibay has crafted a soulful collection of songs that show he's his own person. And that person sure can sing." The release of this CD is a result of his collaboration with Juan Mendoza and Ruben Molina who were instrumental in facilitating the recording of the CD. Garibay has shared the stage with the latest and greatest talents as his brother Randy Garibay, his niece Michelle Garibay-Carey of Planet Soul, Grammy winner, Ruben Ramos and the Mexican Revolution, Jim Waller, Director of the University of Incarnate Word jazz ensemble, the West side horns, and many other wonderful bands. At the moment, Ernie & the Cats perform at "My Brother's Bar" on Friday nights and "The Bar on Broadway" Sunday Evenings as well as many other venues.
