About Barren Ridge Vineyards

Barren Ridge Vineyards is a small vineyard and winery in the heart of Virginia’s beautiful Shenandoah Valley. John and Shelby Higgs opened the vineyard in 2008, on land purchased by John’s father in 1934 when the farm was known as St. James Orchard. As John and his siblings went their separate ways and Virginia’s apple industry faded, the old orchard succumbed to neglect and overgrowth; the apple packing barn was on the verge of being lost to time when John and Shelby decided to revive the property as a vineyard and winery. Clearing the land, tending the vines, and transforming the packing barn into a state-of-the-art winery has been a labor of love for the Higgs family. Rob , their son, and Angela recently joined the team as well. Part of their vision is to see other families celebrate the special occasions and milestones of their lives at Barren Ridge, and they created event spaces characterized by warmth, elegance, rustic beauty, and Southern hospitality, surrounded by a backdrop of spectacular views. Convenient to Staunton, Waynesboro, Harrisonburg, Lexington, and Charlottesville, as well as Washington DC and Roanoke, Barren Ridge Vineyards offers an ideal venue for your celebration, with its friendly and knowledgeable staff, award-winning wines, breath-taking landscape, versatile event spaces, and gracious ambience.

Beautiful Mountains & Winery - An Eventective User from Waynesboro , Virginia

We love Barren Ridge Vineyards! The backdrop of the Shenandoah Mountains is gorgeous; the owners are amazing. We had our wedding here in the spring time in May. It was a gorgeous day; lovely wine supplied by Barren Ridge Vineyards was enjoyed by our guests for our special day. Reasonable prices and the hospitality by staff and amazing mountain views can not be beat! Highly recommend for any special event needs!

Wedding Venue - An Eventective User from Manassas, Va

Out of all of the vineyards that you could pick to host your wedding in Virginia, Barren Ridge is the best. The vineyard has been owned by the same family since it was an apple orchard 100 years ago. The wine is delicious, the views are amazing, but the people make it special. Angela and Robb are excellent hosts and a joy to work with. They made planning our wedding easy and made us feel like we were a part of their family. We also have to mention the tremendous value that Barren Ridge offers. Many vineyards feel like wedding factories, they set you up on the day of your event and move you out that night. Our wedding was the only event that happened at Barren Ridge that weekend and it was treated with the highest priority. We were given the utmost flexibility for setting up and cleaning up after our event, there was no rush because there was no other event that weekend. We look forward to returning to Barren Ridge for years to come, we will always remember our magical weekend there.
