The Poppenhusen Institute is a NYC Landmark which was built in 1868 and is the home of the First Free Kindergarten in the United States. It was built to be the townhall of the area housing many different organizations and activities including the sheriff's office along with two jail cells which remain today .The cells present a wonderful photo opportunity, especially for a bride and groom.
There are two different rooms that are available for renting. The " First Free Kindergarten" Room, including the garden in the Spring and Summer (Max. capacity 80) and the historic and elegant -one of a kind atmosphere of the Grand Victorian Room ( Max. capacity 180.)
Holding your event in this unique 158 year old New York City Landmark, one of the "Bright Jewels in the Crown of Queens" is sure to create a lifetime of memories. The atmosphere, especially in the Grand Hall, is always cozy , warm and magical.
Amenities included in the rental fees are the set up and break- down of Poppenhusen's tables and chairs, parking and tours of the facility.
The Poppenhusen Institute is an accessible facility with a newly installed elevator and accessible bathroom.
Guests will have access to our Native American Exhibit and Jail Cells.
