About The Newberry Library

The Newberry Library is a historical and world-renowned research library that offers beautiful spaces for events and weddings. Opened in 1893, it is home to rare books, manuscripts, maps, music and ephemera from all over the world. The Newberry Library features multiple indoor event spaces with various capacities. The main ballroom, Ruggles Hall, can accommodate up to 208 guests in a warm and cozy library atmosphere created by its mahogany paneled walls and broad windows overlooking Washington Square Park. For more intimate gatherings, the newly created Rettinger Hall and Baskes Boardroom feature beautiful marble floors, and are lovely complements to the Newberry’s unique aesthetic. The fully restored Lobby is a showstopper. Featuring a Romanesque entryway, distinctive chandeliers, 20-foot ceiling and broad marble staircase (great for photos and a grand entrance) it lends itself beautifully to cocktail receptions, dinner parties or wedding ceremonies. Holding your event at the Newberry will support our mission of inspiring research, teaching, and learning in the humanities.

A Peaceful Night of Elegance - An Eventective User from New York, NY

My sister and her husband were married last fall at the Newberry in Chicago. As a research library, it has elegant architecture that is perfect for a wedding venue. My sister chose to have her reception in Ruggles Hall, which was recently renovated into a beautiful space. My father is a piano player and she had always wanted him to play at her reception. This hall had a Steinway at the corner of the room, which accommodated this dream perfectly. In the center of the room is space that is surrounded by four pillars. This space makes a perfect place for a dance floor. Above this section are beautiful chandelier-like lights that come down to dimly light the floor. We placed chairs and tables all around this area and it was an excellent setup. Her party had about 200 guests and the hall fit these comfortably, although I believe if the party was larger, she may have selected a larger hall. All of the staff at the Newberry was extremely helpful during the planning of the event. We hired our own catering company that my sister had wanted and the Newberry staff was very accommodating. I believe my sister paid between $600 and $700 per hour for the room, which she found to be very reasonable compared to other venues. It was a quaint venue that allowed for a very elegant reception. She was delighted with her reception being at the Newberry and I would highly recommend it to others.

Compact Beauty - An Eventective User from Des Plaines, IL

The Newberry Library offered a small to medium sized room for a 150 guest reception, but was a beautiful space! The cocktail hour was in close quarters, but really forced guest to mingle. The main ballroom itself was very quaint. Guests were not too far apart, but close enough to allow conversations between tables. The dance floor was easily accessible, as was the bar which was a favorite for many guests! The one negative was the bathrooms- which were downstairs and hard to get to for some older guests. Overall the venue is a hidden gem in the city of Chicago!
