Description
The Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge (FWNC&R) is located just inside the city limits of Fort Worth, TX. The FWNC&R is a hidden jewel, a wilderness comprised of forests, prairies, and wetlands reminiscent of how much of the Fort Worth/Dallas metroplex once looked. Replete with native flora and fauna, the area beckons to those searching for a piece of nature to refresh their spirits and reintroduce a measure of tranquility to their increasingly urban lifestyles. The FWNC&R is a division of the City of Fort Worth Parks and Community Services Department. Additional financial support is provided by two non-profit organizations dedicated to furthering the goals of the FWNC&R; the Friends of the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge and the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge Conservancy.
In 1980, the need for additional space in the Interpretive Center was realized and construction for an auditorium, library, and offices was begun and dedicated in February 1981. In 1985, the Women in Construction renovated an old home site, complete with a windmill, as a shelter house for programs and groups, which is known as the Alice Ashley Shelter. There's something for everyone at the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge! Come out for a picnic, enroll in a class, take a naturalist-led day or night hike, or enjoy the plants and animals on your own as you explore 3,600 acres of nature.
