The value of the Madame Walker Theatre Center as a national historic landmark and cultural center make it ideal as an event venue for every imaginable occasion. The structure has more than 9 decades of historic richness in the city of Indianapolis and continues its African-American legacy of offering diverse cultural music, performing arts and films. It is particularly noted for being built by the first African-American female millionaire, Madame C.J. Walker (originally known as Sarah Breedlove). Madame Walker started the project in 1919 and it was finished in 1927 by her daughter. The building was dedicated to creativity and community on the near West Side of Indianapolis and less than a mile from downtown Indianapolis. It offered a wealth of entertainment by African-American musicians, classical dancers, movies and plays and continues to do so for the entire residential community and visiting tourists.
The 1988 and 1998 renovations of the Center resulted in the addition of an event venue that includes: 1.) The Madame Walker Theatre Stage for public and private events. The theatre seats 935 and is ideal for stage events, pageants, concerts, rehearsals, lectures and award ceremonies, 2.) The Grand Casino Ballroom which seats a maximum of 300 persons. It has 4,800 square feet and is ideal for seminars, banquets, parties, receptions, meetings, reunions and more, 3.) The Conference Room which seats up to 30 people with full suite audio/visual equipment, high speed internet and data link capabilities 4.) The Walker Memorial Board Room boasts a spectacular view of the downtown Indianapolis skyline. It seats 12-14 people and has video conferencing infrastructure and broadband access that make it perfect for special sessions or important long distance meetings.
The ornamentation is grand and includes 150 original colors hand-applied during the restorations. The plush and comfortable seating, regal design of a classic theatre era and elegant chandeliers make the ambiance simply magnificent. The Center also offers a lobby entrance, box office services, bar, catering and technical services. There is free parking adjacent to the building. The elegant ballroom has a mirrored wall, four exquisite chandeliers and hardwood flooring that enhance events, parties, conferences, seminars and more. There is also an adjoining bar/lounge, full podium microphone and laptop computer capabilities. The Center accommodates small meetings and gatherings and rental fees are based on full or half day requests. The rich legacy of history and culture are combined in one venue site at Madame Walker Theatre Center.
