Set around a small lake, Shorty Howell Park is one of the first parks purchased by the county. It features seven lighted youth baseball/softball fields, a concession building, a lighted track around a football field, a pavilion, two playgrounds and a 1.25 mile paved multi-purpose, along with a 1-mile mulch trail. A new 8,200-square-foot activity building opened in 2005, and houses a large community room with a catering kitchen, a classroom and offices for recreation stafff and park police.

Caterers and event companies are allowed at parks if they provide proof of $1,000,000 liability insurance, listing Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners as additional insured on the policy and as the certificate holder on the policy. A copy of the certificate of insurance must be received in the office no later than two weeks prior to the rental and must be approved before a caterer and/or an event company will be allowed on park property. No alcohol is allowed.
