The Ritz Theatre and Museum was constructed in 1999 on the site of the 1929 Ritz Theater movie house in Jacksonville’s historic African American community of LaVilla. During LaVilla’s height of business and entertainment activity in the 1920s -1960s, LaVilla was known as the ‘Harlem of the South.’ Ritz Theatre houses 400-seats, a beautiful 40 x 30 proscenium performance stage featuring a state-of-the-art sound system and theatrical lighting. Supporting the stage are loading spaces, dressing rooms and technical areas. The museum houses a permanent exhibition of African American history in Northeast Florida. A walk through the museum reminds you of the significant contributions and rich legacy of past generations. The lobby can also be used for various social events, such as luncheons, receptions, anniversay and birthday parties.
