About Rockwood Center-Park-Museum
Joseph Shipley, a Quaker merchant banker, built Rockwood between 1851 and 1854. Its Gothic revival architecture and enchanting landscape were designed by Shipley to reflect the beauty of an English country estate. The Historic Landscape Garden at Rockwood surrounds the Mansion and is restored to reflect Joseph Shipley’s vision of an English Landscape Garden as it existed at Rockwood between 1854 and 1867. In the Rockwood Museum you will find the rooms restored to the way they looked in 1895, the Gilded Age of the Victorian Era. The Museum reflects the way the Bringhurst Family, descendants of Shipley, lived in their early years at Rockwood. The Mansion's Victorian parlors provide the perfect setting for smaller gatherings of up to twenty people. Plan your next special event in one, or all three of the parlors. The lush gardens help set the scene for a ceremony or garden party. At Rockwood Center you will celebrate in the beauty of a historic carriage house.
