NEXT UP IN PORTLAND

Welcome to the 2024 Bealtaine / Spring Exhibition

The newest show from the Carrickahowley Gallery at MIHC features highly accomplished artists Emmalene Blake, Aya Ghanameh, and Manuala Madeira. Blake focuses on large-scale murals, blending street art with socio-political themes like feminism, human rights, and environmental issues. Ghanameh, an illustrator and writer based in New York City, amplifies the voices of ordinary people in historical narratives with her debut children’s book, “THESE OLIVE TREES,” drawing inspiration from her family’s experiences of exile and love for the earth. Finally, Madeira, delves into the nuanced experiences of women navigating societal barriers while shedding light on their disproportionate struggles, inviting viewers on a symbolic journey where her art becomes a reflection of the human spirit and a conduit for hidden stories. “Wounds – A Memoir of War and Love”

Next Meeting 5/16 at 7:30 PM

After nearly three decades reporting conflict from all over the world for the BBC, author Fergal Keane has gone home to Ireland to tell a story that lies at the root of his fascination with war. It is a family story of war and love, and how the ghosts of the past return to shape the present.

Wounds is a powerful memoir about Irish people who found themselves caught up in the revolution that followed the 1916 Rising, and in the pitiless violence of civil war in north Kerry after the British left in 1922.

Forging Ties With the Mitchell Institute in Irish Studies

TWO MITCHELL SCHOLARS TO BENEFIT IN INAUGURAL YEAR

We are delighted to announce the creation of a new MIHC-Mitchell scholarship fund, augmenting awards for Mitchell Scholars who choose to pursue personal or professional enrichment opportunities in Ireland. The MIHC first established a scholarship fund in 2004 to honor Eddie Murphy (1939-2000), a well-known West End resident who founded the Portland St. Patrick’s parade in 1980. Already. this year the scholarships will double Mitchell Institute travel fellowships for two students. The fund will become a permanent part of the Maine Irish Heritage Center’s philanthropic work, establishing ongoing support for students from Maine interested in Ireland.

Governor Joseph E. Brennan, 1934 - 2024

All of Maine and the Nation have lost an outstanding leader and public servant.  We mourn the loss and we celebrate the life of Governor Joseph E. Brennan, the son of Irish Immigrants, who dedicated his life to his core belief that government should be used to improve the lives of its citizens.

Maine is a better place, its children healthier, its educational system stronger, its workforce more vibrant, its land and water cleaner due to the vision and leadership of Joseph E. Brennan.

We extend our deepest gratitude for his five decades of public service—for his own accomplished career and for all those he helped along the way. To listen to interviews with Governor Brennan, visit the MIHC Brennan Archives online.
