We scheduled my husband's 50th birthday at Christopher's for a wine tasting before going out to a dinner celebration. There were seven couples with a wide range of taste and experience with wine, some of us very inexperienced with wine; a few couples closer to the expert level. One of the most amazing things about the tasting at Christopher's was how comfortable he made everyone feel, no matter what their level of experience. At the same time, none of the people who are very knowledgeable about wine were made to feel ""talked down"" to either. Christopher was very knowledgeable about the wines being poured but he kept everything fun and took time to make sure everyone was having a good time. After talking to everyone to find out how much experience with wine that each person had, Christopher began pouring some soft white wines. The first was a soft blend from South Africa just to get everyone started and used to talking about the wine. Then he started pouring three more whites, some we were familiar with and a couple of grapes no one had heard of before. After the whites, he poured a Rose' that surprised most of us. Since it was pink, everyone expected something sweet but it was delightfully delicious. Finally poured several red wines, some light and fruity, some very dark and rich. All along he was talking about each wine, where it was made, the type of grapes and different tricks the winemakers had used to bring out certain flavors. But what made it the most fun was that it never felt like a lecture, he drew everyone into the conversation by asking different questions about what we tasted and what we liked or didn't like. We've been back a couple of times now for the regular daily tasting and several of the couples from the birthday tasting have as well. As always, we've laughed, learned and really enjoyed Christopher and his shop.
