Bones of Cincinnatus

a flexible trombone ensemble

Trombonists from Cincinnati and nearby areas in Northern Kentucky and Southeastern Indiana join talents to perform music for one of the most beautiful sounding instruments, the trombone.  The size of the trombone ensemble varies from 4 to 12 or more, depending on the nature of the event or performance and the availability of the performers.
The name of the ensemble was chosen partly due to the location (Cincinnati was founded by members of the Order of Cincinnatus) and partly because of the model created by the Roman General Cincinnatus.  Cincinnatus was asked by the Roman Senate to leave his farm and lead the army  to defend Rome from invasion in 458 B.C.  After defeating the invaders in 16 days, he resigned from the most powerful position in the army to return to his farm.  George Washington, first president of the Order of Cincinnatus, declined to serve more than two terms as president of the U.S. and returned to his home at Mt. Vernon, following the example of the order's namesake.   The trombonists that make up this group, have temporarily set aside their work to come together for the enjoyment of audiences and the fellowship of making beautiful trombone music.  When the performance ends for the trombonists, they return, like Cincinnatus, to their other responsibilities.

International Trombone Week performances
Since 2005, performances during the first week of April have been a tradition. In 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012,2013, 2014, and 2015 the Bones of Cincinnatus joined with the Lakota Trombone ensemble for a 40+ trombone concert.  Several performances included piano, bass, and drums, a stirring addition for the group.  During International Trombone Week the ensemble performs at churches, retirement centers, community meeting venues.  You will see pictures of several such events below.  Bob Coil has organized other performances over the years for numerous other occasions, but few pictures or recordings preserve memories prior to starting this web page that can be shared.

Bob Coil is a member of the International Trombone Association and is leader of the Bones of Cincinnatus.  He may be contacted about performances by a trombone ensemble or with questions and comments about this web site.  bobcoiltrb@gmail.com
