I never have celebrated my birthday with friends. Had plans to do a ballroom dance theme till hubby hurt his back. No dancing for us. Now I'm out of ideas. I'm not a loud music shake your tail kind of person. I want something memorable but not too expensive. I have about 20 people I am close to. Most of them are couples. I want something fun and entertaining but not cheesy. Any ideas would be appreciated. My budget is under 1500.00. Help!!! (smiles)

How soon? Remember 50 is half a century old. It has a lot of history with it. Ask your friends to send you pictures of you and them, then put together a short maybe 10 minute montage of all the memories. Hire a DJ-remember you can still dance and so can your friends. Keep the food simple-apps and make sure you get a really good cake-your favorite flavor. Play the montage video at the beginning of the party so you all can talk about it. Remember it doesn't have to be flashy-just memorable. Good Luck!

Where are you located? 50th Bday can be much fun if you keep it simple and make it a great day to remember the celebration. You could have tiny hot dogs in BBQ sauce, tiny Italian meat balls with a spaghetti sauce, deviled eggs, pasta salad, green salad, chicken salad, chicken in a mushroom wine sauce, meat & cheese platters, veggie & fruit platters. Not knowing where you live it would be difficult to guess on a price for a catering service to do the party. I do know that where I live you can get that kind of food for about $10.00 to $15.00 per person. There are so many people out of work that caterers are hungry for work these days. Just ask for a tasting before the party and make sure you like the things that the caterer prepares. As for the party it self a theme is always great and have everyone dress in that theme. Like a roaring twenties, cowboy/cow girl western party, a gangster party, pajama party...... just a few suggestions. Get creative and have fun with it. Have a scavenger hunt in your back yard or even in a restaurant or things to find in their cars and on their person. I had one of those at a party once an everyone had so much fun. These were grown-ups too. I gave a prize to the one who hunted the most things.

Hi All, Thanks so much for your responses. I live in the Seattle area and the weather is somewhat unpredictable here so inside is always safe but not as much fun. I hope to celebrate on the 19th and I'm not really the type that feels comfortable hosting a party. Keep the ideas coming. I like the idea of the slide show. I'll keep that in mind.

since i's a 50th party, maybe you can make it a 50's theme. Have everyone dress up in big skirts jeans and white tee's. good old 50's music and make the food simple. agreat touch that I have done for 50's theme parties is a root beer float station where everyone makes there own rootbeer float in the sundea classes and two straws to share with hubby or wife. If you are in the schaumburg, IL area I can set this up for you with out a hitch and stay in your budget. christina@comfortschaumburg.com

Since you don't dance I'd check out local dance schools. Perhaps you can hire very reasonable ballroom, mambo or 40's dancers (I think 2 to 4 dancers would be more than enough and figure about $60 to $100 each to dance for 45 minutes or so). While the folks eat, the dancers could perform a couple of dance numbers for the birthday boy. I'd also suggest a simple Las Vegas-esque dancer lip sync to "hey big spender" and sit on his lap, and wrap a boa around his neck. He'll think you're the best wife anyone has ever had! For the montage,I'd scan a photo of him (one when he was a baby, then a toddler, then a ten-year-old, then a teen, when he graduated college, your wedding up till the present). Everyone would get a great kick out of it. Make some 4x6' prints of each (enough for all your guests) and add a "thank you for coming and sharing my special day" message written in gold markers on the back. They can take one home as a favor. Also, I'd have the bartender do a "specialty" drink upon entering. It could be called, "the older, bolder harvey wallbanger" or "the still sexy "name" gin fizz" - something to that effect.
Good luck and have a great time! If you need invites, thank you cards and a sign-in poster, I can put a package together for you for about $150.
