Guest Connecticut/Rhode Island Border May 11, 2013
Looking for a place to have a baby shower for my daughter thinking of a park or beach close to Connecticut and Rhode Island border. This would be for early July 2013 family from Massachusetts and Connecticut also New York area trying to make it accessible for all.

Hi Guest,

For convenience, the Crowne Plaza right off Route 95 (801 Greenwich Ave Warwick, RI 02886, (401) 732-6000) is probably your best choice. It is within a mile of Route 95, easy to find, and about half way between CT and MA.

For a unique venue, you could rent the Rose Island Light House (http://www.roseislandlighthouse.org). Accessible by boat owned by Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation from Newport. Since it is a Bed and Breakfast some people could stay overnight. Unique and beautiful, but not as convenient as, say, Crowne Plaza.

For a place more accessible than the lighthouse, but more intimate than a Crowne Plaza there are a number of Bed and Breakfasts and smaller restaurants. I have attended events at Tower Bed and Breakfast in Narragansett RI (http://towerhousebandb.com). The facility is very nice and the owners do everything they can to help out.

For other venues in the Narragansett Area, I would recommend contacting the Chamber of Commerce (http://www.narragansettcoc.com/) and asking Deb for ideas. Deb has significant restaurant experience. I would also contact the Southern RI Chamber and ask for Elizabeth (http://www.skchamber.com) who also has significant restaurant experience.

In terms of activity at your event, if you would like a set of activities which are entertaining, fun, and teach us more about how we sense, perceive, learn, remember, make decisions and respond I'd be pleased to offer a version of my Education by Entertainment programs (contact information at: https://sites.google.com/site/educationbyentertainment/arranging-a-program).

Many thanks for asking.

Thank you Dr. Shapiro for you suggestions, will look into these. I was hoping for maybe parks or beaches within this range that would be appropriate with amenities and activities for families, such as playground for kids, where we could also grill food, etc.

Hi Guest,

My favorite of the Rhode Island parks for this type of event is Colt State Park. It is beautiful. Colt Park is located on Route 114 in Bristol, RI (home of the first 4th of July parade). They do have places to cook, a covered shelter, and even an outdoor wedding chapel (for the benefit of others wanting to get married in a park). Colt Park does not have a playground, but they do have playing fields. Also, people sometimes bring in their own bounce house, etc.

To get to Colt Park from Massachusetts simply take Route 95 to 195 to the Route 114 exit. You then drive on Route 114 through Barrington and Bristol until you see the park turn off. Alternatively, take Route 24 to 114, and then 114 to Bristol. From Connecticut take Route 138 through Newport to Route 114.

The disadvantage (to someone from the Northeast) is that it is miles from an interstate highway, though it is a nice drive.
