In February 2006 I was the manager responsible for organizing a business meeting for employees of a Fortune 500 company held in Research Triangle Park North Carolina. One of our attendees, Luana Matos, was from Brazil. Luana's attending the meeting required that she travel on her birthday. So, we decided to surprise her with birthday celebrations during the business meeting. The highlight of the celebrations was presenting Luana with a birthday cake replica of the Brazilian Flag. The photo below shows Luana blindfolded as her cake is delivered (right) and Luana posing behind her cake as she is presented with a replica of the large sign saying Happy Birthday Luana Matos which was projected on the front wall of the meeting room during her cake presentation celebration (left).
Other celebrations included having dinner at a Brazilian restaurant the day before the cake ceremony and involving Luana in lots of team building activities. A slideshow of the celebrations may be viewed on SlideShare.
Luana and everyone else present really enjoyed the celebrations. Indeed, they were the topic of conversation in both Brazil and the United States for a long time after the actual celebration.
Luana, who was once a high school exchange student in the USA, suggested that a series of celebrations, featuring presenting the honoree with a cake replica of their national flag, would be a very meaningful way for host parents and schools with exchange student programs to celebrate their international student's birthday.
