U.S. Government Makes a Vacation “Resort” at Guantanamo Bay

June 18, 2008

For just $42 per night, 1.5 million American service personnel and 3,000 Guantanamo Bay construction workers can rent an air-conditioned suite for their sunny discount vacation in Cuba, courtesy of the U.S. Government.

The “resort,” otherwise known as “Taliban Towers,” is located right next to the notorious Guantanamo Bay prison, where nearly 300 prisoners are detained and tortured, and have yet to be charged with a crime.

Taliban Towers resort comes complete with a barbed-wire motif, and vacationers get to go to the movies, go bowling, windsurf, take boating and fishing trips and sunbathe right next to suffering prisoners. In case they are feeling a little homesick, the resort also boasts a McDonald’s, KFC and a Wal-Mart.

Visitors can even purchase souvenirs to remember their trip by. Among the offerings are coffee mugs that say “Kisses from Guantanamo Bay” and “Honor Bound to Defend Freedom,” and a children’s T-shirt that reads “Someone who loves me got me this T-shirt in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.”

The United States has rented Guantanamo Bay as a military base for $4,499 per year since 1903. The camp was established in 2002 after Afghanistan was invaded.
