The Scariest High-Tech Haunted Houses in America

If you haven’t been inside a haunted house for awhile, you might be shocked to see how far they have come. The haunted houses of today have animatronics and Hollywood-quality sets and special effects designed to shock you and make you scream.

Haunted houses around America keep trying to one-up each other with the latest technology and special effects. Here are some of the most high-tech haunted houses in the nation.

The 13th gate, Baton Rouge, LA

skulls.jpgThe 13th Gate in Baton Rouge has 13 themed indoor and outdoor areas where you can crawl through an old hearse and crematory oven, get lost in dark underground tunnels and end up on a rickety bridge that overlooks hundreds of live snakes.

The haunted house is 40,000 square feet in total, and is considered to be one of the country’s top haunted attractions.

A movie industry construction crew works year-round on the Haunt and during the Halloween season over 100 professional actors along with special effects makeup and airbrush artists bring the show to life.


The Asylum, Denver, CO

The Asylum is located in Denver, Colorado. They make new floor plans every year to keep people guessing and it has been rated the most haunted house in Denver.

Here’s a taste of what you’ll get, from their website: “Within the walls of the legendary Nightmare Factory a hidden passage was unearthed! This passage descended two levels into Gordon Cottingham’s Hospital for the Mentally Insane, The Asylum.

Much deeper and darker than the previous levels, the Asylum is a damp and musty place infested with spiders, rats, snakes, and the endless screams of the tortured souls.”


Spookywoods, High Point, NC

spookywoods.jpgLocated on a 55-acre farm, Spookywoods is North Carolina’s largest haunted attraction.

They feature cutting-edge set and costume design, and have been rated one of the top 13 haunted houses in the nation.

They have a haunted house, haunted tram, haunted cornfield, a walkthrough, and performances by Jonathan Frost.


House of Shock, Jefferson, LA

House of shock is an elaborate haunted house located just five minutes outside of New Orleans.

The House of Shock started when creators Steve Joseph, Ross Kapelman, Jay Gracianette and Philip Anselmo (frontman for the band Pantera) decided to create a haunted house in Jay’s backyard in 1992.

Over the next 15 years, the House of Shock evolved into a massive attraction that features an elaborate pyrotechnics show where the entire stage erupts in flame.

They also host concerts featuring national and local acts, which gives them the nickname the “Rock and Roll Haunted House.” They have a full bar too.

It is said to be the most controversial haunted house and they have been accused of worshipping Satan.


Netherworld, Atlanta, GA

netherworld.jpgNetherworld in Atlanta, Georgia has been terrifying visitors for the last 12 years and attracting attention for its custom movie-quality special effects, unique themes, extremely detailed sets and great actors.

Netherworld was created by film and television professionals and has earned a reputation for being one of the nation’s top haunted houses.


Nightmare on 13th, Salt Lake City, UT

nightmareon13th.jpgThe Slayer, an 18-foot animatronics monster, guards the entrance the 13th Gate in Salt Lake City, a haunt that has been scaring Halloween.

The 13th Gate is one of the country’s most technologically-advanced haunted houses.

They feature state-of-the-art animatronics, lasers, lighting effects, show control systems and scary actors.

Large portions of the haunt are changed every year to keep the crowds guessing.

The event is renowned for its elaborate Nightmare Theatre Preshow.


Britannia Manor, Austin, TX

britannia.jpgBritannia Manor used to be known for being the country’s most elaborate haunted house from 1988 to 1995.

Located on a large hill near Austin, Texas, people used to line up for weeks in advance, camped out, to get one of the free invitations to the show, which was basically like a role-playing game.

The place was described as a “full-contact Halloween adventure.”

Groups of participants would go through the grounds as they gathered clues and solved puzzles while cast members interacted with them both physically and verbally.

Britannia Manor is the home of game designer Richard Garriot.

The Bates Motel, Philadelphia, PA

batesmotel.jpgThe Bates Motel is a 25-minute wagon ride through the deep and dark forest of Arasapha Farms, located just outside of Philadelphia.

The ride features computer-controlled animations, incredible sets and over 45 actors who will jump out and even fly over you.

Ten digitally-equipped hay wagons take you through the forest where ghouls and zombies come to life.

They say that it’s the scariest hayride on the east coast.


The Darkness, St. Louis, MO

The Darkness is another one of America’s best haunted attractions.

They have been scaring fear-seekers for the past 15 years and have won awards from around the world.

They have everything from a “city of the dead,” to a massive 15-foot Minotaur, to a t-rex that will come within an inch of attacking you.

The Darkness features amazing sets that are Hollywood-movie quality.


Erebus, Pontiac Michigan

erebus.jpgErebus Holds the Guinness Book of World Records title for being the world’s largest walk-through haunted house.

Erebus is located in Pontiac, Michigan.

They have Hollywood-quality effects and makeup, and the actors are allowed to touch you when they are scaring you as you make your way through the huge haunt!

    It was nice to watch these videos. However, the MTV tour doesn’t show outside the States.

    Also, it had me thinking, they should employ patsies. Imagine the scare you’d get if one of your group gets abducted and something very nasty happens to them?

    13th Gate in Baton Rouge is AWESOME!!!! It is so scary. I don’t know who was holding each other more me or my 26 year old daughter.
