Esther Short Park Established in 1853, Esther Short Park was bequeathed to the city at the death of its namesake in 1862 and made Vancouver's town square. The city's first piece of public art, a bronze statue of "The Pioneer Mother" was ceremoniously unveiled in 1929. She still stands at the north entrance to the park. Various other attractions, including a skating rink, a wading pool and a railroad engine, have since come and gone. Esther Short Park is in downtown Vancouver adjacent to Columbia Way and bordered by Sixth and Eighth Streets. This urban events hub features a covered performance stage, circular promenade, brick square in the southeast corner and bell tower. The Old Slocum House Theater company performs regularly in the Slocum House. The park is the scene of city concerts, picnics, weddings and festivals. It can be rented for large gatherings and events. The park has restrooms, numerous electrical outlets for vendors and sound, large grassy areas and many trees providing shade on hot summer days.
