Elizabeth Lee Cantrell captures natural and spontaneous moments in time of celebrations, people and places. Her unique compositional and active shooting style tells a special story for clients to cherish. Beginning her photography career under the tuteledge of Holly Wright at the University of Virginia, and then receiving a MFA in Photography and Media Arts at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Elizabeth was guided by Alex Sweetman, Barbara Jo Revelle and integral in bringing Melanie Walker and Albert Chong to the University of Colorado at Boulder. Other influential artists she has worked alongside have been activist Lucy Lippard, Melanie Yazzie, Gail Wagner, Margaret Wagner, Lars Westby, Cara Jaye, Ethan Jackson, Kay Miller, and the incredible students at University of Colorado's Fine Arts Program. Influential artists and writers have been John Wood, Lynne Marshall-Lennemier, Gary Oakley, Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, Ramsay Thomas, Mark Castator, Dean Dass, William Bennett, Jim Hagan, Susan Sontag, Dee Crouch, Patrick Nagatani, and a host of other "unknown" artists and scholars besides her own mother, Lee Young Hi Cantrell. As a working photographer she turned down academic track teaching positions to concentrate and learn from professionals in the field of image processing working in camera sales at Jones Drug & Camera, portrait photographer for Motophoto, Olan Mills School Photography, WalkAbout Photography and her most influential mentoring with internationally renowned wedding photographer, Gary Oakley at *NOT DISPLAYED* . Besides team shooting with other photographers, her own el studio specializes in teaching clients photography, handmade books, and art instruction. Classes and workshops that she has conducted have been at The University of Colorado Fine Arts Department & Continuing Education, University of West Virginia, Ganado Unified School District, and through private elementary schools such as Jarrow Montessori, and Free Union Country Day. She currently resides in the small village of Crozet, Virginia with her son, the matriarch, Ella, Tess and her grandpup Truman, Buryl and Mama Kitty. Gracie and Gabriel watch over folks home and farm near Ivy. Her photography and artwork have been exhibited in Colorado, Virginia and Seoul, South Korea where she was awarded a J. William Fulbright junior researcher scholarship. Weddings she has documented have been in locations from Charlottesville, Crozet, Keswick, Orange, Richmond, Wintergreen and other rural Virginia areas to Aspen, Boulder, Denver, Estes Park, Golden, Peaceful Valley, Vail, and Winterpark, Colorado. Her warm and unobtrusive style keeps her clients at ease while capturing those special moments and allowing people to enjoy the celebration.
