 8/4/2011 | | "The Most Beautiful Venue you can Imagine!", An Eventective User from Houston, Texas | My husband and I were married a few months ago, and we chose the most beautiful place in Houston to have our wedding reception! We celebrated the night away at the Houston Museum of Natural Science Gem and Mineral room. This is the portion of the museum that houses all of the precious stones in cases. Guests were able to visit and mingle in all of the rooms of the permanent Gem and Mineral collection, including the high value vault. This was the most gorgeous place to have a reception!
When you decide you might want to have a reception here, you meet with a representative of the museum first. She lets you walk the museum with her and ask all types of questions. Our questions concerned acoustics for the DJ, seating (and whether or not the venue could hold 150 guests), recommended location for food and dancing, etc... We liked that the rooms are very dimly lit - perfect for a nighttime wedding. The light comes mainly from spotlights used to light up exhibit boxes. The museum offers extra spotlights for areas needing additional light.
The price is fixed, so we did not have to negotiate at all. A 50% deposit is due to reserve the room for the date requested. The remaining 50% is due one week before the event.
There are three other parts of the Museum of Natural Science that can be reserved for a reception: the Cochrell Butterfly Center and the area in the main section that houses dinosaur bones. I was nervous because the museum told us (two months ahead of time) that another wedding reception would be occurring at the same time in the dinosaur section. This ended up not mattering because the acoustics were so good that all sound from outside of the room was muffled.
I highly recommend this room for a wedding reception in Houston. Since the weather is so awful from April through October during most years, I think an indoor reception is a must. The cold, museum air-conditioning is exceptional, and what could be more beautiful than this gorgeous museum as a backdrop?! |
