In 1861, construction crews set a 19th Century public building record when they completed the Galveston United States Custom House in exactly four months and two weeks of onsite work. When it was built, the 1861 Galveston Custom House was on the cutting edge in the use of iron in building construction. Now, more than 130 years later, the building again is in the spotlight - not for its construction, but for its adaptive use. As the 21st Century approaches, the 1861 Galveston Custom House, the oldest non-military federal building Texas, now is home to GALVESTON HISTORICAL FOUNDATION, Texas’ oldest historic preservation organization. In November 1998, GALVESTON HISTORICAL FOUNDATION signed a long-term lease on the property with the General Services Administration. After six months of restoration, GHF moved into the building in June 1999. GALVESTON HISTORICAL FOUNDATION’s properties offer unique and affordable locations for your party, wedding, luncheon, dinner or business meeting. This magnificently renovated structure is available for a variety of functions. The second-floor courtroom provides an ideal setting for seated dinners as well as buffets or receptions. Additional space for entertaining is available in the hall. The upstairs galleries make a lovely addition to the interior space, weather permitting.
