Located in a three-story Victorian home in suburban St. Louis, the museum was originally built as a private home in 1901 for the George Lane Edwards family. Edwards was the first president of his family's brokerage firm, A.G. Edwards and Sons, as well as a director of the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.

The Magic House was founded in 1975 by two St. Louis women, Barbie Freund and Jody Newman, who volunteered three years of their time to create a participatory museum that would be both fun and educational.
