The Magic House - St. Louis Children's Museum, Saint LouisThe Magic House - St. Louis Children's Museum, Saint Louis — The Magic House, St. Louis Children's Museum, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing children with hands-on learning experiences in a creative and stimulating environment. Located in a three-story Victorian home in suburban St. Louis, the museum was originally built as a private home in 1901 for the George Lane Edwards family. Edwards was the first president of his family's brokerage firm, A.G. Edwards and Sons, as well as a director of the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.

The Magic House was founded in 1975 by two St. Louis women, Barbie Freund and Jody Newman, who volunteered three years of their time to create a participatory museum that would be both fun and educational. The Magic House - St. Louis Children's Museum, Saint Louis — More than 40,000 children visit the museum annually for field trips; additional 25,000 children participate in the museums outreach programs in their own classrooms and libraries. The Magic House has received national recognition for its exhibits and educational programming, and is now one of the most attended children's museums in the country with 400,000 visitors annually. In fact, in 2001 FamilyFun Magazine selected The Magic House as one of the top 12 family destinations in the nation-the only Missouri attraction to win that award. The Magic House - St. Louis Children's Museum, Saint Louis — The museum has undergone four separate expansion projects. In 1985, The Magic House opened a 2,000-square-foot addition designed exclusively for children ages 1 to 7, A Little Bit of Magic. This area was created to refine gross motor skills, enhance a young child's self-concept, and build self-esteem. In 1989, an addition was constructed on the front and south side of the house. This included a large wraparound porch, an expanded lobby and an elevator that allowed the museum to be accessible to all visitors. In 1997, The Magic House experienced another growth spurt that more than doubled the size of the museum, featuring a Children's Village, Fitness Center, Math Path and an area just for infants, toddlers and parents, For Baby & Me. As attendance soared, so did the museum's need for more space. In 2001, The Magic House opened Backyard Magic, an outdoor facility that includes an Education Pavilion, Children's Sculpture Garden, an open-air exhibit patio and additional free parking.
